Abstract

The purpose of this article is to analyze the narrative function of signs in Kim Ju-yeong's short story “In Search of Soedulle” and, based on this analysis, to examine the thematic consciousness of the work. This work adopts a journey-type structure in that it develops its narrative centered on spatial movement. Furthermore, it falls within the category of division novels in that it reveals a thematic consciousness concerning the issue of division. The narrative characteristic of this work lies in its examination of real-world problems through symbolic experiences. This is because it embodies issues by dealing the reality of division through the relationship between signifier, signified, and interpreter. The symbolic experiences presented through the journey capture phenomena where the dynamism of the subject has vanished. The signs ‘Goseokjeong’ and ‘Cheorwon’ encountered along the travel route evoke the social constraints imposed by the reality of division. The sign ‘Goseokjeong’ generates an interpretant called ‘taboo’ during the process of signification. Also, the sign ‘Cheorwon’ represents the distorted relationship between sign and object. Another characteristic of this work lies in shifting the semiosis experience onto the interpretive subjects themselves. The suspension of inquiry into the relationship between sign and object is caused by interpretive subjects who turn away from the problems of reality. Particularly the scenes that starkly reveal characters participating in escapist realities despite recognizing these problems particularly highlight the author's unique narrative strategy. This is because the narrator positions oneself as the subject of criticism through self-revelatory statements exposing the own flaws. This strategy dynamically emphasizes that the problems of the divided reality are tasks requiring resolution through the practice of all community members.
