Abstract

This paper aims to describe semiotic relations between spatial indices and narrativeelements, and their rhetorical effects in Kim Yujeong’s novel SSSgol. The plot of this novel is unique in that it is divided into several episodes withsubtitles representing spatial indices such as mountain, village, stone, stream, androad. But, we can not f ind any direct narrative connections among them. By meansof semantic analysis, I will show that these spatial indices works as a metaphoror a metonymy, but they retards the narrative progress of this novel. Such conflictbetween spatial sign and narrative sign creates strong rhetorical effects of this novel. Even every language articulates its objects, this novel shows discursive articulationmore distinctively. While spatial features are connected indexically in real world,their literary representations are disconnected in language world. If the spatial featuresremain only as a background of story as in most of other novels, they can notbe regarded as some articulative units. But this novel articulates spatial features clearly ,therefore it shows conflicts between reality sign and language sign more explicitly. In sum, through this analysis, we acknowledge that this novel creates strongrhetorical effects by means of conflicts between reality sign and language sign, andalso conflicts between spatial sign and narrative sign.
