Abstract
Chen Cheng(陳誠)’s Xiyu wanghui jixingshi(西域往回紀行詩) is the work he compiled during his second mission as an envoy to the Western Regions(西域) in the 11th year of the Yongle(永樂) reign(1413). It consists of a total of 77 poems and encapsulates the experiences and impressions he gathered while serving the Emperor as diplomat in the Western Regions. The collection also appears in his late-life anthology Chenzhushan wenji(陳竹山文集). The titles of the poems in the collection display a great variety. They may be broadly categorized into three types: first, the most frequent type, in which the title takes the name of a mountain, river, or city-state; second, cases in which a festival or feast day serves as the title; and third, works titled after a distinctive product or scenic feature of the Western Regions. The Xiyu wanghu ijixingshi records Chen Cheng’s western expedition in poetic form, and holds research value at multiple levels—historical-scientific, geographical, ethnographic, and literary. Not only is it a precious primary source for studying Sino-Western interaction and Silk Road cultural dynamics in the Ming period, its poetic medium likewise demonstrates the fusion of “geographical description - cultural cognition - spiritual expression”. Moreover, through the Xiyu wanghui jixingshi we are enabled not only to grasp the natural landscape and social customs of the Western Regions, but also to glimpse Chen Cheng’s inner journey as an envoy and the political-cultural relations between the Central Plain of early Ming dynasty and the Western Regions.
