Abstract
Pei Songzhi (372–451), under the command of Emperor Wen (Liu Yilong, 407–453) of the Liu Song dynasty, compiled the Annotations to the Records of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguozhi zhu, 三國志注), an extensive commentary on Chen Shou’s (233–297) Records of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguozhi, 三國志). Chen Shou, a native of the fallen state of Shu Han (蜀漢), sought to obtain an official position and livelihood under the newly founded Western Jin (西晉) dynasty and thus attempted to accommodate himself to the Jin regime. In doing so, he deliberately concealed, minimized, and distorted the truth of the coup d’état by which the Sima clan (司馬氏), the founding force of the Jin dynasty, usurped the imperial authority of Cao Wei (曹魏). Where Chen Shou’s historiography failed to fully convey historical truth, where conflicting, complex, and multilayered accounts made the truth difficult to grasp, or where his avoidance, concealment, minimization, or distortion caused the record to diverge from historical fact, Pei Songzhi sought to uncover the truth through a process of collecting, comparing, and substantiating other historical sources. At the same time, Pei reflected on and expressed skepticism toward the very notion of what constitutes a “truthful historical record.” Furthermore, Pei maintained a receptive attitude toward prophetic omens, mythological figures, ghosts, the afterlife, and Daoist immortality practices—elements far removed from empirical historical truth—and incorporated related accounts into his annotations. This paradoxical and contradictory attitude toward historical materials in Sanguozhi zhu both perplexes the reader and provokes intellectual engagement. The purpose of this study is to elucidate the distinctive features of Sanguozhi zhu, which simultaneously pursues historical truth, questions the possibility of absolute historical authenticity, and embraces mysticism and superstition. Moreover, it aims to examine the reasons why Pei Songzhi’s annotations came to embody such a complex and self-contradictory character. To this end, the paper explores various instances of Pei’s historical citations and argumentations in Sanguozhi zhu, as well as examples reflecting the mystical and superstitious cultural tendencies of the Liu Song imperial court.
