Abstract
This paper examines the literary distinctiveness of the envoy poems by Jeong Ryong 程龍, the only military official among the Ming envoys whose works are included in Hwanghwajip 皇華集. In contrast to most Ming envoys, whose missions were primarily diplomatic in nature and aimed at delivering imperial edicts, Jeong Ryong’s mission was carried out under the exceptional political circumstances of intensified confrontation with the Later Jin and the reconfiguration of diplomatic relations between Joseon and the Ming dynasty. Particularly notable is that he entered Joseon by sea and remained for an extended period in Namhansanseong 南漢山城, demonstrating an unique travel route and pattern of residence unlike those of previous envoys. As a result, his poetic works reveal features distinct from those of other envoys. First, they reflect his intent to secure stability in Ga Island (Gado, 假島) and his determination toward the conquest of the Later Jin, thereby embodying the political and military purposes of his mission. In some cases, his poems contain specific references to activities not recorded in official documents, transforming political aims into poetic representation. Second, his prolonged stay at Namhansanseong fostered active poetic exchanges with Joseon literati and Buddhist monks, resulting in a distinctive pattern of cultural interaction. These works, characterized by an introspective tone and aesthetic observation of nature and objects, reveal a literary individuality that departs from the descriptive conventions of earlier Ming envoy poetry. Moreover, the poetic exchanges with numerous Joseon scholars and monks underscore the distinct cultural engagements that arose from his unusual residency. Through this analysis, this paper highlights the limitations of previous scholarship on Hwanghwajip, which has often emphasized general patterns, and argues for the necessity of considering the literary features of individual missions in relation to the contemporary political context, the envoy’s social status, and the responses of Joseon literati. Ultimately, by proposing a new framework for analyzing the literary works of Huanghuaji, this study seeks to broaden the methodological horizon for future research.
