Abstract

The present study examined poems on the first travel to Yenching included in 「Yeonhaenggijeong」 of 『Gyeongwonchongjip』, one of Chujae Cho Su sam’s early writings. We first had a general review of 『Gyeongwonchongjip』, and then a literary review of the poems on the travel to Yenching in 「Yeonhaenggijeong」 of 『Gyeongwonchongjip』. 「Yeonhaenggijeong」 recorded in the form of poems what Chujae experienced in his travel to Yenching during the period from October 15, 1789 to March 26, 1790, which was the first one among Chujae’s six travels to Yenching. The poems in 「Yeonhaenggijeong」 can be divided largely into two types. One is the expression of the poet’s feelings during the travel. 「Yeon haenggijeong」 records the itinerary of Chujae’s company, so we can trace the itinerary only with the titles of the poems. In these poems, he described his excitement at the foreign country, described the landscape of each area, and expressed his sentiments there. In addition, they have historical consciousness, faithful in recollecting the traces of the past. The other describes the poet’s association with literati in Yenching. Chujae was highly interested not only in new cultures in China but also in associating with literati there. Probably for this reason, he expressed his meetings and fellowship with literary men whon he met at that time. 「Yeonhaenggijeong」 is valuable as a historical material in that it provides clues to Chujae’s early life and literature, which have been relatively unknown. In addition, it plays an important role for correcting errors in the compilation of Chujae Collection. The new experience of traveling Yenchin was a turning point for Chujae to overcome his frustration in self‐realization caused by social restrictions on his social standing, and to change his perceptions. In conclusion, 「Yeonhaenggij eong」 is the starting point of Chujae’s literature, and will play a critical role in future research on his literature.
