Abstract

This study examines Wu Hanchen’s Yuan zaju Shengjinge(生金閣), focusing on the motif of snow as a means to explore the ethnic identity and cultural sensibility of the character Pang Yanei. Previous scholarship on Shengjinge has focused on narrative structure or moral characterization, with little attention paid to the relationship between climate motifs and ethnic identity. This research addresses this gap by analyzing the latent ethnic codes embedded in Pang Yanei’s titles and by investigating how the natural phenomenon of snow informs his perceptions and actions. Notably, Pang Yanei’s hunting activity during heavy snowfall reflects a Mongol understanding of snow not as an obstacle but as an opportunity, demonstrating the climate-adaptive cognition characteristic of nomadic hunting cultures. This behavior contrasts with sedentary agricultural worldviews and symbolically represents the Mongol pastoral and conquest-oriented ethos. In this context, snow functions not merely as a scenic backdrop but as a narrative device revealing the multi-ethnic tensions and the essence of fear in the Mongol-ruled Yuan dynasty.
