Abstract
In Korean language education, textbooks function as both embodiments of the national curriculum and benchmarks for instruction. Prior scholarship, however, has concentrated on critiquing the completed product, leaving the dynamic process through which curriculum, scholarly discourse, and classroom needs are translated into textbook texts largely understudied. To address this gap, this article advances “textbook writing studies” as a process-oriented agenda and builds its theoretical and methodological foundations. This article repositions Korean language education as an organizational-evolutionary design science devoted to constructing learning environments. From this standpoint, textbook writing is not a passive transfer of disciplinary knowledge but a complex design practice that selects and reorganizes content in line with educational aims and values. Its core features are articulated as a three-part typology: educational writing addressing both teachers and students; rewriting that recontextualizes curricula, prior textbooks, and disciplinary knowledge; and collaborative writing by diverse experts. Based on this framework, the article delineates two complementary lines of inquiry: author-focused studies examining agents of writing and experience-focused studies analyzing writing practices and processes. It systematizes key research design elements (levels of analysis, author characteristics, publication regimes) and recommends qualitative approaches suited to in-depth inquiry, including case studies, narrative inquiry, autoethnography, and oral history. By excavating and sharing the practical knowledge embedded in textbook writing, this article provides an empirical basis for future curriculum and textbook development and contributes to the scholarly maturation of textbook studies.
