Abstract

The aim of this article is the understanding of the characteristics of Śaiva religious thoughts and rituals in Śiva Purāņa. The religious thoughts of Śaivism follows main stream of Puranic Hinduism and has some sectarian characteristics at the same time. It understands that cosmos repeats the process of creation, destruction and recreation. It`s metaphysics is non-dualistic theism which combines non-dualism of Vedanta and polytheism originated from vedic religion and various tribal cults. And it`s religious system is monistic or monotheistic polytheism which integrates many gods that came from various origins into Siva as a supreme God. The understanding of nature of man and his existential condition also shares with other Hindu sects with little difference. For example, Śaivism explains the real nature of individuals is same as the nature of supreme God but Vaisnavism denies that sameness. And Śaivism gives the meaning of liberation, Moksha as liberation from the cycle of birth and death or self-realization. This is the same as the other Hindu sects. But there is difference between Śaivism and Vaisnavism in explanation about the highest stage of liberation. The former insists identification with Siva, the latter insists Visnu`s region, Vaikuntha. The ritual system of Śaivism has complexity and multi-layers. It integrates rituals of Brahmanism, Śramanism and various tribal cults. We can divide these rituals two types, self- disciplinary rituals and theistic rituals. And It`s flexibility and tolerance that grants various easy alternatives in rules and process of rituals shows it`s popular character for common Hindus. This study concludes that Śaiva religious thoughts and rituals show the characteristics of syncretism of various religious systems, especially Aryan cult and non-Aryan cults. And Śaivism shares many similarities in thought and ritual structures and contents with other Hindu sects, though there are a little differences. Therefore this article proposes we should understand the difference among the Hindu sects is not difference in structure and nature but in focusing aspects.
