Abstract

This study aims to understand the concept of three gods that projected into Indian religion and life, focusing on the Post-Mauryan period in which main characteristics of Hinduism appeared in Vedic religion and the atheistic religions such as Buddhism and Jainism in non-Vedic traditions experienced theistic change, by comparing the three gods system in Vedic religion with that in Buddhism. As a result, it is confirmed that the gods such as Brāhma, Viṣṇu, Śiva, etc. in the Hindu concept of the Trinity, forming in the Post-Mauryan period are described as the incarnations of the supreme god, set up from a sectarian viewpoint, and as one, which differs from the Buddhist concept of the Trinity. In Buddhism, the object of the incarnation is limited only to the Buddha shown as in the doctrine of three Buddhas and trikāya, and the Buddha never incarnates into a bodhisattva consisting of three gods in the Buddhist pantheon. Through this, it is revealed that the Buddhists intended to give the Buddha a superiority over the divine powers of the Hindu shrine by granting the discriminative status between the Buddha and the bodhisattvas in doctrine, and by applying the divine powers and characteristics of the main gods in the Hindu shrine to the bodhisattvas in the Buddhist pantheon. And that the contents of the three gods system concerning on the divine powers and characteristics of the bodhisattvas were established in Buddhist pantheon later than the formation of that in the Hindu shrine is also proved.
