Abstract
This article tries to discuss the process of the rapid mass-produced in India war films since 1990s and also tries to understand that topic with political and social contexts. In order to help its analysis, this paper examines the Indian war film’s motivation, themes, contents and features into time series depending on the evolution process. India’s popular movies insist on its unique forms and thoroughly try to meet audience's tastes. As there are certain fixed audiences, they just retain the existing approach, but didn’t need a new innovation. Therefore, before 1990s Indian firms had not handled topics about the pain of division. Moreover, not only they didn’t project movies about Hindu-Muslim confrontation and conflict, but also war films such as India-Pakistan collision hardly produced. However, since 1990s, Indian movies couldn’t be free from the sudden political, economical and social fluctuations. Indian firms accepted new mass media technologies, development of TV networks, spreading of violent nationalist movement which was based on Hindu fundamentalism and the effects of globalization. Especially, as the BJP and Hindu right-wing group promoted the policy which utilizes the mass media, it gave an opportunity for emerging of war films which encourage blind patriotism and extreme nationalism. The aim of the war movies which were manufactured while Hindu right-wing political forces and some movie producers together try to spread dominant ideology was defining Pakistan as a hostile country and inspiring Indian people’s patriotism. Those war films were not interested in investigating or analyzing the intent behind political action and the truth of the wars, rather than by stimulating nationalist emotions, they just focused on their commercial successes. Now Indian war movies should avoid the situations which are used as a political tool by political forces and should pursue aesthetic evolution by getting out of the biased ideology.
