Abstract

We may say that the Upanisads belongs to the tradition of monism. When we define atman or brahman as the consciousness reality which is one and unchangeable, we meet with a dilemma that we can not explain the cause of the phenomenal world which has diversity and materiality. Samkhya avoided this dilemma through the dualism by which prakriti is suggested as the cause of he phenomenal, and predominated over Vedanta. But as long as Samkhya dualalism also accepts purusa as one and unchangeable reality, they must meet another dilemma that mutual relation of two realities is impossible. Adi Sankaracarya suggested “the name and form in non-evolvement (avyākṛte nāmarūpa)” as the cause of the phenomenal world, and said that it is not same and not different to brahman. Although he tried to hold the unchangeableness of atman and to explain the cause of the phenomenal world by the conception of the name and form in non-evolvement, his suggestion has been criticized as just another dualism theory. But Saiva monism defines atman not as the unchangeable object but as the activity of consciousness. Adi Sankaracarya and Samkhya argue that atman or purusa is beyond the phenomenal world, so it must not be changed in the flow of time. By this reason atman can not have the activity as its character. Saiva monism calls the oneness aspect of consciousness, as it is, its ontological one as light(prakaśa), and its activity aspect, as it is, its epistemic one as the self-awareness(vimarśa). Saiva monism argue that everything is just consciousness, so consciousness as subject and the object being cognized also is just consciousness, by the reason, the activity of consciousness is the self awareness. Saiva monism divides two kinds of modes of the self awareness of consciousness. The first is called as the pure evolvement principal(śuddhasṛṣṭi tattva). In this mode, although consciousness is divided into subject and object, it maintains the unity as one consciousness. But in the second mode(aśuddhasṛṣṭi tattva), owning to the increasing of shadow between subject and object, the aspects of subject and object assume independent and separate material things each other from one consciousness. It is by this second mode of consciousness that the phenomenal world is begun. By this theory on consciousness, Saiva monism has been able to explain the relation between atman and the phenomenal world without another principal by which the cause of the phenomenal world is explained.
