Abstract
This article aims to understand the characteristics of religious systems, thoughts and rituals of Hinduism according to it’s historical development through the analyzing of it’s scriptures’ historical development and analyzes the meaning of them in the history of Hinduism. For this, The author divides the history of Hinduism into former and latter terms and analyzes main scriptures in each term. The Veda (Rigveda, Brahmana, Upanishad) , which we can say the basic text of Hinduism, is analyzed as the text of former term, Mahabharata, Ramayana, Bhagavadgita, Purana, Tantra are analyzed as the main texts of latter term. Focussing on these texts, the author presents her views on the changes and developments of Hindu religious systems, thoughts and rituals according to historical process. Especially, the author concerns to the process of transformation of Hinduism from the elite religion for priests and higher castes to the popular religion for the mass and the synthesis of these two religious forms. The results of this article are like below. The first, Hinduism had been formed and developed with the synthesizing of Aryan religion which came from outside of India and various native religions. And with the changes of religious forms in this process, new religious scriptures were composed continuously. The second, the process of this syncretism had been developed to the direction of not conflicts and splits but coexistence and harmony. The third, the historical development of Hinduism and Hindu scriptures went into middle way which could unite the two extremes, like ritualism and idealism and this worldly and other worldly attitudes. The fourth, Hinduism and Hindu scriptures went through the transforming process from the religion of priests and high casts into the popular and open religion for all casts and mass. The last, the author proposes the necessity of more advanced study on Purana and Tantra because these two texts are very important for understanding of present Hinduism, especially Hinduism for mass but until now they have not been studied properly. Purana shows important religious changes and syncretism in the history of Hinduism and Tantra shows another important religious stream in Hinduism which are different from the orthodox Hinduism.
