Abstract
This study considered the meaning of the first song of Śivasūtra, "the Consciousness is the Self(caitanyātmā)" in accordance with Ksemaraja's commantary, the Vimarsini. In addition, the history of Śaivism before the tradition of Advaita Śaiva was summarized and presented briefly. Śiva, who appears as Rudra in the Ṛgveda, was a violent god of storm and disease, but gradually changed to a god who protects humans and livestock from storm and disease, and eventually emerged as the one and only God and a personal God in the Mahābhārata. Śavism largely divided into Puranic Śavism, which protects the value of Vedas, and non-Puranic Śavism, which used to practice non-Vedic rituals, and the latter was divided into Outer Path(Atimārga), which opened to ascetics only, and Path of mantras(Mantramārga), which included not only ascetics but also Brahman householders who worshiped Śiva. The Path of Mantras was again divided into Śaiva-siddhānta, who argued for dualism, and Advaita Śaiva, who argued for non-dualism. The doctrine of Advaita Śaiva was developed philosophically by Brahmins in Kashmir in the 9th century, and Śivasūtra is the first work at that time. In Śivasūtra, the reason that the Absolute Conciousness(caitanya) was defined as the real Self(Ātman) is for revealing the difference of Śiva from Puruṣa and Brahman, who were claimed as the real Self in Sāṅkhya and Vedānta. Puruṣa and Brahman have the difficulty of not being able to relate to the phenomenal world that changes constantly, because they are defined as an immutable reality. Śiva, the true Self of Śivasūtra, transcends the phenomenon world as the Consciousness that creates it. In other words, like Puruṣa and Brahman, Śiva is absolute subject as "viewer" that cannot be objectified like an existence of the phenomenon world. However, Śiva is the Consciousness that creates the phenomenon world by dividing itself without any other cause, such as prakṛti of Sāṅkhya and māyā of Vedānta. Therefore, all existence of the phenomenon world is Śiva, and Śiva is the one who is the cause of his existence without any other cause or restriction as like prakṛti or māyā. This characteristic of Śiva is called the absolute freedom(svātantrya) or “uncreated”. Beyond Puruṣa and Brahman, whose completeness is restricted by prakṛti and māyā, it is because of this absolute freedom that Śiva is defined in Advaita Śaiva as the true Self. This Absolute freedom(svātantrya) is called the absolute Consciousness(caitanya), the true Self(ātman), and Śiva in Śivasūtra Ⅰ.1. and Advaita Śaiva.
