Abstract
This article is one part of a broad study which deals the religious thoughts and rituals of three main sects of Hinduism through analysis of religious texts in order to understand structures and characteristics of the present Hinduism. As a first step, this articles analyses the characteristics of religious thoughts and rituals of Vaishnavism in Bhagavata Purana. The results of this study can be summarized like below. The first, we can find religious syncretism in the Purana texts because the Purana is a product of the fusion of Vedic culture of orthodox Bramins and non-Vedic culture of native tribes. Therefore Bhagavata Purana, one of the Purana text and a main text of Vaishnavism also shows characteristics of syncretism in it`s metaphysical and ritual systems. The second, the metaphysics of Bhagavata Purana reveals non-dualistic theism which combines the non-dualism of Vedanta and bhaktism as one form of theism of non- Vecic cults. The third, the ritual systems in Bhagavata Purana provides various bhakti ritual forms with the Vedantic self realization as the means of attaining moksha. This is also the result of syncretism of two cultures. Based on this results of analysis, this study defines the religious system of Vaishnavism in Bhagavata Purana as the non dualistic theism.
