Abstract
This paper examines two presentations of the Veda by two eminent Sanskritists in the history of Indian studies—Roberto de Nobili (1577-1656) and Friedrich Max Müller (1823-1900). And, in so doing, it shows that the Western scholarship on India had long been governed by Christian world view and Indian religions gained their meaning only through Christianity. De Nobili, in defense of his “going native” manner of missionary work, presented Indian Brahmins as wise men implicitly comparing them to the ancient Greek natural philosophers. He relegated their most “sacred” text, the Veda, to the secular status and, in its stead, introduced to the Tamil Brahmins the Bible as the “authentic” Veda, that is, the genuine revelation. Max Müller, on the contrary, regarded the Veda as the pre-biblical bible, that is, the text which evolved into the Bible. On the basis of the works of William Jones whose Mosaic Ethnology separated the transmission lines of the Jews (Semite) and the Indo-European (Hamian) and Henry Colebrooke who observed ‘Monotheism’ in the Veda, Max Müller saw the first record of human religiosity in the Veda and called it a “forgotten bible.” n their makings of the Bible a veda and the Veda a bible, the Christianity-centric perspective that reduces cultural phenomena of others into something “comparable” to the elements of Christianity is implied. And it is still operative in the contemporary vision of “world religions” in which comparability is tacitly assumed.
