프리드리히 막스 뮐러의 불교인식- ‘열반(Nirvāṇa)’ 해석을 중심으로 -

초록

프리드리히 막스 뮐러(Friedrich Max Müller, 1823∼1900)는 “종교학의 아버지”로 호명된다. 뮐러는 생전에 방대한 저작을 남기고 대중적 사랑을 받은 학자였다. 영국의 빅토리아시대에 비교언어학·비교신화학·비교종교학 등 다방면에 걸쳐 활동하며, 세계종교들의 기원과 역사적 전개에 대한 독창적 이론을 수립했다. 그는 당시 세계 곳곳에 식민지를 거느린 대영제국의 동양학자(orientalist)로서 활동했다. 그는 불교연구에서도 뚜렷한 업적을 남겼다. 그러나 그의 명성과 업적은 오늘날 거의 잊혀졌다. 이 글은 아직 국내에 잘 알려져 있지 않은 막스 뮐러의 불교인식에 대한 연구이다. 특히 그의 ‘열반(nirvāṇa)’에 대한 이해의 변화과정과, 그 연구에 사용되었던 방법론의 특성에 초점을 맞춰 살펴보았다. 막스 뮐러는 당시 불교의 ‘열반’ 개념에 대한 부정적 시각이 지배적인 상황에서 독자적 방식으로 ‘열반’에 대한 새로운 이해를 시도했다. 막스 뮐러라는 당대의 대사상가가 자신의 사상 체계 속에서 불교의 주요 개념을 어떻게 재구성하고 재해석했는지 살펴보는 것은 동양과 서양의 만남과 근대불교의 역사 이해에 중요한 부분이 될 것이다.

Abstract

Friedrich Max Müller (1823∼1900) is called the "Father of Comparative Religion". An eminent scholar, Müller wrote extensively during his lifetime, the Victorian era of England. He was active in various fields, especially Comparative Philology, Comparative Mythology, and Comparative Religion, and established original theories on the origin and historical development of world religions. One of the renowned orientalists in the British Empire, Müller also made remarkable achievements in the study of Buddhism. However, his fame and achievements are largely forgotten today. This article studies Max Müller’s view on Buddhism, which is not yet well known in Korea. In particular, this study focuses on the process of change in his understanding of 'nirvāṇa' and the characteristics of the methodology used in the study. Müller attempted a new understanding of 'nirvāṇa' in his own way when negative views on the concept of 'nirvāṇa' were dominant in Europe. Importantly, my study examines how Müller, one of the greatest minds in his time, reconstructed and reinterpreted the major concept of Buddhism in his ideological system, which symbolizes a great meeting between the East and the West and helps understand the history of modern Buddhism in a new light.
