초록
In this paper, through consideration of the Chinese studies of William Jones and Joshua Marshman, it is confirmed that the place where British Chinese studies began was not in Malacca, Macau, or Guangzhou, but in the northeastern part of India, Bengal. At the same time as introducing the pioneering significance, I want to show its limitations. In the case of William Jones, in particular, how the comparative philological method premised on the so-called Mosaic History or Mosaic Chronology, based on the national story in the Christian Old Testament dealt with China. It is possible to examine how interest in Chinese scriptures such as The Bookf of Poetry was expressed. Joshua Marshman did similar work to Roebrt Morrison, such as Chinese studies and Bible translation, in a relationship of competition and collaboration with him, but it can be confirmed that the influence of William Jones, who worked in the same area, was deeply permeated. Marshman's Jonesian perspective, his purpose as a missionary, and the limitations caused by his locality of India (Bengal), not China, can be confirmed through the viewpoints of his critics, especially the French school.
