Abstract
The struggle between Indra and Vritra Asura, the representative gods of Rig Veda, has been represented and interpreted in various forms such as light and darkness, good and evil, purity and unpurity, and represented Indian mythology. Max Müller, the father of Religious Studies, has led the modern Sanskrit linguistics and philology, translating Veda and other major hindu scriptures and contributing greatly to the objective academic establishment. In modern religious studies and mythology, Müller also introduces the Indra myth of Rig Veda as the representative solar deity of Vedic myth. On the premise that Indra is the sun god, and paying attention to the aspect of the god of rain in this deity, he defines the darkness of Vritra Asura as a drought. In addition, his mythical reading method that interprets Vritra as a symbol of the naturalistic phenomenon of clouds and sheep(or ram) and the savagery of the non-aryan dasa(dāsa) appears as a structure in which naturalistic interpretation and racist interpretation are fused. In other words, Müller's Vedic hermeneutic method, which deciphers Rig Veda's Indra-Vritra mythology into a naturalistic religion and myth, seeks to define Veda as a Natural Religion(自然宗敎) and Kathemotheism(交替神觀), and to recognize only the origin of the Aryans and the original text of the Indo-European languages. It is impossible to fully understand Müller's academic position by examining his interpretations of the surrounding myths of Rig Veda and only by a few views of orientalists. However, by roughly examining Muller's naturalistic and racist vedic interpretations, we have outlined the orientalist tendencies and alternatives prevalent in modern Western scholars. I would like to re-evaluate that it contains racist prejudice and Orientalism. In addition, Müller's interpretation of the myths of Indra and Vritra criticized and excluded the existential problems of universal evil and suffering that existed within the Indians.
