A Study of Subjectivity, Empathy, and Point of View in Conversational Discourse

Discourse is one of the important components for Japanese as a Second Language (JSL) learners. But discourse in textbooks remains to be conventional compared to everyday conversation. Rapid increase in short messages via phones and the internet, and increasing number of students participated in language courses in Japan do question the linkage between the discourse in textbooks and real life conversation. Conversational discourse is subject to the presence of the listeners. Such discourse to exchange information between the speaker and the listener takes place in the same moment. Thus, speakers and listeners share the same conversational moment. This paper studies the application of Japanese in real communication based on conversational discourse analysis. For such a purpose, this paper develops a comparative study between Japanese and Korean on the following remarks, using published texts. First this paper develops a comparative study on the usage of personal pronouns and closing remarks from a perspective of subjectivity. From a perspective of empathy, this paper analyze the sentence-final ellipses. Lastly, from a perspective of points of view, this paper studies the classification of verbs.
