Abstract
This study examines the dish names presented in the book ZhongGuoMingCai from a rhetorical perspective, focusing on their naming methods, structural patterns, and rhetorical features. Chinese dish names are mainly categorized into "literal naming" and "figurative naming," with combinatory patterns including "ingredient-based," "regional," "method-oriented," "auspicious," "attribute-modified," and "compound." Ten rhetorical devices were identified, including metaphor, metonymy, exaggeration, allusion, personification, depiction, pun, analogy, symbolism, and phonetic similarity. Metaphorical dish names primarily employ metaphors and metonymies; metonymic names are categorized as representing objects by color, proper names, or characteristics; allusive names draw from figures, stories, and classical texts. Some dish names combine multiple rhetorical devices, demonstrating linguistic complexity and creativity. Analysis of these rhetorical devices reveals the cultural symbolism and aesthetic value embedded in Chinese dish names. This study aims to provide reference for scholars and readers interested in Chinese food culture and cross-cultural food studies, and to contribute to understanding their cultural significance and conveying their value in the globalization and internationalization of Chinese cuisine.
