Abstract
This study conducted qualitative research on the primary education major at Y University in China, based on a sociological institutionalism framework. Interview data from 14 participants revealed that the thesis supervision system in Chinese private universities faces institutional challenges across three dimensions: regulatory, normative, and cultural-cognitive. At the regulatory level, discrepancies between institutional demands and student capabilities, along with inconsistencies in implementation, were identified. At the normative level, a weakening of professors' responsibility and a tendency toward formalistic guidance were observed. At the cultural-cognitive level, system rigidity, lack of adaptability, routinization of thesis writing, and weak academic identity were evident. These problems stem from imbalances among institutional logics and insufficient cooperation, leading thesis supervision to become a mere formality and eroding its academic function. The study provides a new theoretical lens to understand these challenges and offers practical implications for institutional improvement, cooperation, and enhancement of pre-service teachers' academic competencies. It further suggests restoring the original intent of thesis guidance and promoting qualitative advancement in teacher training through a multidimensional support and motivation system that balances normativity with educational value.
