톨테카 문명은 지리·신화·문화적 측면에서, 테오티우아칸은 물론 치치메카와도 유기적인 연속성을 지닌다. 종족·언어적 차원에서 테오티우아칸과 톨테카 간에는 상당 수준의 연계성이 확인되며, 치치메카 시기에는 이 관계가 심각하게 훼손되었다. 레온-포르티야가 제시한 톨테카요틀 개념에는 나우아틀라카의 역사 인식이 내재해 있고, 톨테카와 메쉬카 간의 신화·종교·문화적 연계성이 중심을 이룬다. 이로 인해 치치메카 시기의 지역적 다양성과 이질성이 상당 부분 배제되어 있다. 톨테카요틀 개념은 특정 문명지의 이상적인 전통이 아니라, 시기와 지역별로 이상화된 문명지들의 전통까지 포괄하는 역사·문화 흐름의 유기체적 관점에서 이해되어야 한다.
Abstract
The Toltec civilization exhibits an organic continuity not only with Teotihuacan but also with the Chichimeca in terms of geography, mythology, and culture. From an ethno-linguistic perspective, a considerable degree of connection can be observed between Teotihuacan and the Toltecs, although this relationship was severely disrupted during the Chichimeca period. The concept of Toltecáyotl as proposed by León-Portilla embeds a Nahuatlaca historical consciousness and centers on the mythological, religious, and cultural continuity between the Toltecs and the Mexica. As a result, the regional diversity and heterogeneity characteristic of the Chichimeca period are largely excluded. Rather than being understood as the idealized tradition of a specific civilization, Toltecáyotl should be interpreted as an organic historical and cultural flow encompassing the traditions of various civilizations idealized across different periods and regions.
