Abstract
In today's Korean society, the family is experiencing a complex change, and one of the representative forms is the multicultural family. In Korean society, multicultural families mainly refer to married migrant women from Asia and the families they have formed with Korean men, and the government's policy support is mostly aimed at them. This study focuses on the agency of married migrant women as active subjects, who are recognised as members of society by sharing reproductive roles as wives of Korean husbands, mothers of Korean children, and daughters-in-law of Korean families. In particular, through an ethnographic study on the marriage experiences of married migrant women from Latin America, the study seek to understand multicultural families as a space where cultural heterogeneity is exchanged and intersected, and to analyse the process by which married migrant women reconstruct a new family culture through adaptation and negotiation with a new culture. The results of the study show that married migrant women from Latin America are actively adapting and negotiating to form a new type of multicultural family, rather than simply conforming to the dominant family culture and patriarchy in Korea, despite various difficulties in raising children and experiencing gender division of labour with their husbands.
