Abstract
The conquest and colonization of the northern territories of Nueva España presented significant challenges due to its harsh environment and strong indigenous resistance. Later, it also faced political instability from emerging european powers. To establish effective defense, the Spanish crown created the presidio, whose formation and development were closely tied to the region's geopolitical conditions. Understanding the presidio necessitates an examination of its relationship with the mission. In Nueva España, missions and presidios functioned as distinct yet interdependent institutions that emerged and evolved through the Chichimeca War and the subsequent peace process of the 16th century. These institutions maintained a complementary relationship and played a key role in promoting the colonization of northern Nueva España. The presidio was not only part of the border defense system but also served non-military functions as a key tool of colonial policy. Starting as a temporary military outpost, it evolved into a fortress and later a settlement with agriculture, livestock, and housing. Thus, the presidio held military and political importance in Spain's colonial rule in northern Nueva España.
