Abstract
The purpose of this study is to apply e-tandem learning, which can develop target language skills and intercultural communication skills, to Spanish-Korean learners and investigate the participants’ perceptions. To this end, we conducted an empirical study with 15 Korean Spanish learners majoring in Latin American studies at University P in Korea and 15 Spanish Korean learners majoring in East Asian studies at University M in Spain. In order to understand the characteristics of the research participants and efficiently select learning partners, a survey on personal information was first conducted. Considering the characteristics of the students identified in this way, one Korean and one Spanish partner were selected to form a total of 15 teams. Since actual e-tandem learning is conducted through the WhatsApp application, the partner’s cell phone number is provided to the students, and the learning time between partners can be coordinated in advance. Over the next four weeks, students chatted with their learning partners for one hour once a week on a given topic, and after completing their studies, they submitted their learning diary to the professor. In addition, the professor checked the learning diaries submitted by the students, provided feedback on students’ questions, and monitored overall learning. After 4 weeks of e-tandem learning, a survey was conducted among students regarding their learning. Lastly, we discussed ways to improve e-tandem learning based on the survey contents and the learning diaries written by the students.
