Abstract

This paper conducts a comparative analysis of horn-shaped cups excavated as artifacts and depicted in iconography from the Japanese archipelago, the Korean Peninsula, and mainland China, examining the reception and development of horn cup culture in East Asia. First, on the Chinese mainland, clay horn cups and line drawings carved on bronze vessels have been confirmed since the Late Neolithic Period. During the Shang dynasty, the bronze sì gōng (兕觥) emerged, forming the foundation of horn cup culture. By the Sui and Tang era, Rhyton imagery appeared in Sogdian tomb murals and sarcophagi. Analysis of these depictions reveals that Rhytons played a significant role as drinking vessels in banquets. This influence eventually spread into aristocratic society, merging with Chinese drinking customs and creating Sancai-glazed horn-shaped cups. Next, on the Korean Peninsula, a unique type of horn-shaped cup with a pedestal developed, particularly in Gaya and Silla. In Silla, horn cups were closely associated with rituals and the belief in the sacredness of ox horns. Additionally, no horn cup artifacts have been discovered in the Baekje and Goguryeo regions, highlighting the differences in perception and reception of horn cup culture across the Korean Peninsula. Lastly, in the Japanese archipelago, despite the minimal influence from mainland China and the Korean Peninsula, horn-shaped cups with flat tips were widely distributed and developed within a unique cultural context. The reception and development of horn cup culture in East Asia was not simply the result of a one-way transmission of technology and culture from the Chinese mainland. Instead, it reflects the intersection of multiple cultural lineages across the region, each area achieving its distinct development.
