Abstract
This paper focuses on how doctrinal knowledge of Sicheongyo (侍天敎), a Donghak-affiliated religious order in the 20th century, was disseminated and received by its followers through the pure Korean texts published in the Sicheongyo-weolbo (侍天敎月報). The pure Korean texts in this bulletin were presented in various forms, such as editorials, novels, lectures, and opinions, and the contributors ranged from the leadership of the order to local members and itinerant preachers. The selection of topics in the pure Korean texts was often influenced by the doctrinal direction that the order sought to promote, indicating that these writings were intended as a means to convey the doctrinal knowledge desired by the leadership to the majority of its followers. The doctrinal worldview of Sicheongyo was elaborated through themes of cosmology, theology, anthropology, and teleology, as explained in the “Proselytizing Text” (「傳道文」) published in the first issue of the bulletin. Such doctrinal knowledge was disseminated and received through the pure Korean texts. An analysis of the content of these texts reveals that doctrinal knowledge was primarily received and understood in relation to self-cultivation. The concept of ‘Sicheon’ (侍天), or the idea of ‘serving God within oneself,’ was recognized as the core knowledge underpinning all ascetic practices. Based on this understanding, various methods of ascetic practice were recommended to believers seeking longevity and blessings Notably, numerous stories were published about women experiencing the efficacy of these practices through devoted spiritual discipline. The ascetic practices of Sicheongyo were deeply connected to ethical dimensions and encouraged the abandonment of previously held religious behaviors. These themes, closely linked to daily life, were intended for all followers of the faith. The use of pure Korean texts proved to be an effective means of achieving this goal.
