Abstract
This study is focused on the rhetorical characteristics developped in the letter of Speusippus (408/7-339/8 BCE) to Philip II (382-336 BCE). Macedon was rapidly expanding her power while Athens and Sparta were weakened by the Peloponnesian War. And Philip II was the king who led the Macedonian expansionist policy. It is in this political situation that Speusippus wrote a letter to Philip II to improve the relationship between Academy and the Macedonian royal family. That is the reason why we can in his letter various rhetorical intensions and the elements of persuasions. To begin with, I will examine as a preliminary study the problem of authenticity of the letter (section 2); then the historical and political context in which Speusippus was compelled to write the letter (section 3); after that, in analyzing the structure the letter (section 4), I will try to clarify the rhetorical maneuvers especially based on the use of mythology and history, as well as on the criticisms aimed at Isocrates who was the most famous rhetorician of the time (section 5).
