Abstract
Rhetoric is the study of speech and language that emerged as a result of the development of democracy in Athens, Greece. Especially, rhetoric was rapidly developed in the fifth century B. C., by Sophists who taught wanting to be a politician young Athenian people. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the possibility of rhetoric as phronēsis. To this end, firstly, we critically examine Sophists' conception of rhetoric. Secondly, we explore Isocrates' view of rhetoric. Finally, we suggest some educational implications of the nature of rhetoric as phronēsis. For Sophists, rhetoric has been regarded as technē, a language skill to persuade each other. However, is rhetoric merely technē? This paper attempts to answer this question. Isocrates seems to see rhetoric as phronēsis in terms of cultivating the sound opinion(doxa) or mind capable of correctly understanding situations and solving problems in life, beyond acquiring a skill of speech. Therefore, rhetoric education is meaningful in that it goes beyond simply teaching speech and language skills, and suggests a direction to pursue the formation of a sound mind which is related to the cultivation of phronēsis in life by speech and writing.
