Abstract

In the Panegyricus published in about 380 B.C., Isocrates presents his political opinion, so-called panhellenism, in two parts : (1) the war against the barbarians (Persians) and (2) the concord among the Greeks themselves. In the beginning of this discourse, these two parts are disposed in the order of “both (1) and (2)”. This order seems to be paradoxical at first glance, but is quite rhetorically designed. In fact, if we consider the fulfillment process of the two parts, it seems to be more naturally in the order of “(2) & (1)” or “(2) → (1)” than the previous order. In fact, Isocrates disposes the two parts in the natural order in the following paragraphs (15, 19). In total, this makes a chiasmus. Isocrates’ second point is concerned with the hegemony of the united Greek city-states and their military expedition to the barbarians. By praising the virtues of Athens and condemning the vices of Sparta, he insists that Athens is the most relevant to the hegemony. But at the end of the discourse, his conclusion is their shared leadership in the unity of the Greeks and the expedition to Persia. But this conclusion is merely an ostensible, not a real one. His ultimate aim is to demonstrate the virtues and the conditions necessary that Athens has fulfilled in former days as a leader in the Delian League, and whichever city-state may be a leader should fulfill on the panhellenic dimension.
