수사학이 유용한 이유들에 대한 검토 - 아리스토텔레스『수사학』, 1355a20-1355b7을 중심으로 -

이 글에서는 아리스토텔레스가 『수사학』에서 수사학이 유용하다고 든 네 이유들에 관해 살펴보았다. 아리스토텔레스가 든 이유들은 대단히 함축적이기 때문에 정확한 의미를 찾기 위해서는 추가적인 검토가 필요한 것이다. 이에 관해서는 한석환의 연구가 상세한데, 랍(Christof Rapp)의 견해에 주로 의존하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 한석환의 연구에서 출발하여 그리말디(William Grimaldi)의 해석을 통해 보완을 시도했다. 본 논문의 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째 말이 진리에 대해 갖는 관계는 오랫동안 철학과 수사학의 영역에서 논란의 중심에 서 있는 주제라 할 수 있는데, 수사학의 유용성에 관한 아리스토텔레스의 입장은 파르메니데스에서 시작되어 고르기아스, 프로타고라스를 거쳐 플라톤에까지 이어지는 논쟁을 배경으로 하면서 동시에 아리스토텔레스 나름의 입장으로 귀결된 점과 관련됨을 알 수 있었다. 수사학과 진리에 관해서는, 플라톤의 입장은 정치세계가 구성되어야 한다면 그 수단은 수사학이 아닌 철학이어야 한다는 것이다. 반면 아리스토텔레스는 수사학은 진리나 정의 자체를 다루지 않지만, 정치세계는 의견의 세계라 이해했으며, 따라서 수사학은 정치세계에 필수불가결한 수단이 된다. 둘째 수사학의 유용성에 관한 아리스토텔레스의 입장은 그의 시대에 말을 중심으로 한 실천양상에 대한 성찰과 입장의 표명이었다는 점에서 오늘날 우리에게 수사학의 유용성에 관한 논의는 아리스토텔레스의 『수사학』 한 단락에 대한 해석 차원에서뿐 아니라 오늘날 우리 사회에 말의 실천양상이 어떠하며 또 의미 있고 유용한 말의 실천이 있다면 그것을 무엇으로 불러야 하는가와 관련된다는 점을 지적했다.
Abstract
Four reasons for which Aristotle claims the usefulness of rhetoric in his Rhetoric are so implicitly explicated that they require a comprehensive re-examination of their meaning. This paper is a further study beginning from critiquing Seok Hwan Han’s explanation, which heavily relies on Christof Rapp’s interpretation of Aristotle’s Rhetoric. This paper attempts to supplement Han’s limits with William Grimaldi’s. The conclusion is as follows. First, Aristotle's own position on the usefulness of rhetoric is shaped from the context of the debate that begins in Parmenides and goes through Gorgias, Protagoras, and Plato. As to rhetoric and truth, Plato argues that if there is a necessity to constitute the political world, we should resort to philosophy, not rhetoric, as the means. However, Aristotle points out that rhetoric does not deal with truth or justice itself, but entails a necessary means to politics insofar as the world of politics is that of opinions and beliefs. Second, Aristotle’s position is to express his introspection and stance on the aspect of practices centering on the logos in his day. In this precise regard, discussion on the usefulness of rhetoric for us today should not simply be restricted to an interpretation of Aristotle’s Rhetoric, but extended to the practice of language and the very way in which the meaningful and useful practice of language is named.
