Abstract

This study examines how a crisis of political representation and resulting post-ideological socio-economic discontent in France were strategically appropriated by extremist political forces, thereby polarizing the country's conflict structure. The Yellow Vests (Gilets Jaunes) movement initially emerged with concrete and diverse demands, such as repealing fuel taxes, alleviating living costs, and improving access to public services. However, the absence of centralized organization and a unified platform created favorable conditions for extremist actors like the National Rally (RN) and La France Insoumise (LFI) to selectively reinterpret and incorporate the movement into their own discourses. The RN reframed the movement’s grievances as issues of national sovereignty and identity, intensifying nationalist sentiments, while the LFI portrayed it as a class struggle against financial elites and affluent groups. As a result, the multifaceted concerns of participants were oversimplified, leading to a realignment of France’s political conflicts into polarized antagonisms of nationalism versus radical class politics. This mechanism of issue appropriation extends beyond France, reflecting structural vulnerabilities of contemporary democracies grappling with economic inequality, cultural anxieties, climate crises, and immigration. By empirically investigating the dynamics through which a crisis of representation, post-ideological discontent, and extremist narratives coalesce to reshape political cleavages, this study seeks to contribute to broader discussions on the fragility of modern democracy and the necessity of reconstructing deliberative and intermediary structures capable of accommodating complex social demands.
