Abstract
This study examines how the American-born populist strategy of Trumpism has been adapted to the British political context through the Conservative Party’s Rwanda asylum plan in the post-Brexit era. Despite the UK Supreme Court ruling the policy unlawful, it was enacted in 2024 via the Rwanda Safety (Asylum and Immigration) Act, weakening judicial oversight while justified by appeals to “border control” and “keeping Britain safe.” Drawing on Mudde’s concept of authoritarian populism and Norris and Inglehart’s cultural backlash theory, the analysis explores how Trumpism’s emotional mobilization and anti-institutional strategies entered British legislative processes, political rhetoric, and party organization. The findings show that Trumpism has been reshaped into an authoritarian form within British politics, eroding liberal democratic norms when fused with institutional power. The case also reveals that the judiciary, civil society, and electoral change can serve as sources of institutional and societal resilience against authoritarian pressures.
