아우구스티누스의 초기 사상과 후기 사상을 대립적으로 보는 소위 “두 명의 아우구스티누스” 테제에 입각한 연구들에 따르면, 아우구스티누스의 초기 저작들은 신플라톤주의의 강한 영향을 받은 결과 보다 철학적이며 인간성에 관해서는 펠라기우스의 견해에 가까울 만큼 긍정적인 반면, 그의 후기의 사상은 390년대에 성경, 특히 바울 의 신학에 천착하여 원죄와 은총의 필요성을 강조하는 방향으로 바뀌었다. 이러한 관점에서 피터 브라운(Peter Brown)은 아우구스티누스의 사상을 두 가지 다른 모습, 즉 야누스의 얼굴로 빗대기도 한다. 이에 대해 본 연구는 아우구스티누스의 인식론적 기본 방향이 그의 회심 시기에 이미 확고하게 틀을 갖추었고 이후 그의 사상 전체에서 지속적인 일관성을 보여주는 원리임을 보임으로써 아우구스티누스의 사상의 통일성을 강조하고자 한다. 회심 이전의 구도 단계에서는 이성과 철학을 우선하여 종교적 진리를 탐구하였다면, 회심 과정에서는 성경과 신플라톤주의를 비교, 수용하면서 이성과 철학에 대한 그리스도의 권위를 확고히 하는 방향으로 전환하였다. 이러한 인식론적 전환은 아우구스티누스의 창조론, 특히 ‘무(無)로부터의 창조’ 교리에 잘 드러난다. 이 개념은 그리스 철학이나 신플라톤주와는 완전히 다른 관점의 창조론으로 이성에 대한 성경 계시의 우위성을 확실히 보여주는 교리이다. 아우구스티누스는 이 교리를 절대적인 창조주에 대한 인간 이성의 한계로 인해 발생하는 ‘패러독스’이자 인간의 지성에는 감추어진 ‘신비’로 제시하는데, 이는 아우구스티누스 신학을 초기부터 후기까지 일관성 있는 체계로 유지시키는 인식론적 원리라고 할 수 있다.
Abstract
Peter Brown’s suggestion to rethink his well-known but old historical description of Augustine as “a figure of Janus” with the contrasting aspects of thoughts in the earlier years after conversion and the later ones enabled some scholars to revisit it from a different perspective. For this new direction, Brown mentions another line of scholars who regard Augustine’s thought as continuous, such as Goulven Madec. Carol Harrison, one of the followers of this line, attempts to revise the old theory, focusing on Augustine’s earlier writings, and concludes that those earlier writings are homogeneous to later ones. Motivated by such works, this article tries to follow this new direction on the characteristics of Augustine’s conversion and his doctrine of creatio ex nihilo, elaborating them as the epistemological turning point. Unlike the typical simplification of the conversion as immersing into Neoplatonism highlighted in the miraculous event at a garden in Milan, this paper focuses on the process of conversion as intellectual and epistemological change triggered by the comparison of Neoplatonism and Paul’s writings, which shows the point that he finally accepted the limit of reason over religious faith and accepted the priority of God’s revelation. This epistemological change is evident in his doctrine of the creation out of nothing(ex nihilo). Augustine disregards any other philosophical understandings (e.g. Neoplatonist view of creation as emanation) and establishes it as foundational one based on the Bible. Conclusively, this point is evident in or right after his conversion and continued to his later works such as De civitate Dei.
