본 연구는 아우구스티누스의 신플라톤주의로부터 도출한 “계층적 우주론”(hierarchical cosmology)을 초기 죄론의 관계성 속에서 고찰하고 그 신학적 공헌과 한계 그리고 함의를 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 아우구스티누스는 그의 죄론에서 신의 전능과 악의 존재라는 문제를 신플라톤주의적 계층적 질서라는 관점을 통해 접근한다. 그는 계층적 우주론의 체계 속에서 하나님을 우주의 가장 상위에 존재하는 “지고의 존재인 일자”(One Supreme Being)라고 정의할 뿐만 아니라 악을 수직적 계층의 가장 하부에 위치시킴으로써 ‘비존재’(non-being)라고 정의하고 있다. 그의 계층적 우주론은 그의 신정론과 죄론의 논리적 틀을 제공할 뿐만 아니라 그 내용마저 결정하는 절대 기준으로 작용하고 있다. 분명 아우구스티누스의 초기 죄론은 계층론적 우주론을 바탕으로 악과 죄에 대한 구조와 속성을 예리하게 관찰하고 있다. 분명히 그의 악에 대한 이해는 종말론적으로 선의 악에 대한 승리라는 희망의 메시지를 전하고 있다. 또한 마니교와 같은 그 당시 이교사상들의 도전 앞에서 신의 전능과 악의 존재라는 문제에 대한 논리적인 관점을 제시하고 있다. 하지만 악의 명제적(rhetoric), 종말론적(eschatological) 무존재성에 집중함으로써 현실에서 마주하는 악의 실제성과 파괴성을 단지 인간의 자유의지의 오용으로 인한 부산물 정도로 간주할 수 있게 한다. 또한 그의 계층적 세계관은 하나님의 선한 창조의 결과물인 창조 세계를 지나치게 수직적인 관점으로 정의하여 인류의 구원성마저도 인종, 성별, 지위에 따라 계층화할 수 있는 위험성을 내포하고 있다. 본 연구는 “존재론적 위계” 또는 “창조의 질서”라는 개념은 “새로운 피조물”이라는 성서의 메시지를 통해 재해석되어야 한다고 주장한다.
Abstract
This study examines Augustine's Neoplatonic hierarchical cosmology in relation to his hamartiology and suggests contri- butions, limits and implications of his doctrine. Augustine approaches the compatibility of God's omnipotence and the existence of evil through his Christianized Neoplatonic ontological hierarchy. The hierarchical cosmology is the central theological foundation that buttresses Augustine’s hamartiology. Augustine defines God as “One Supreme Being” and evil as “non-being” by locating God and evil in his hierarchical frame. The hierarchical cosmology supplies a logical tool for Augustine’s hamartiology and becomes an absolute standard to decide the scope and content of his doctrine of sin and evil. On the one hand, Augustine effectively explains the issue of theodicy and the phenomenon of evil by using his hierarchical cosmology. His understanding of evil and sin delivers the eschatological hope that the benevolent God finally defeats evil. He also supplies a persuasive perspective on the Christian notion of God and evil in front of the challenges of the heretic teachings of his time, like Manichaeism, employing his ontological system. Augustine keenly examines sin and evil's structure and charac- teristics through the lens of ontological hierarchy. On the other hand, however, his cosmology contains the weakness in which destructive evil and sin in the world can be understood as a mere side effect of humanity's misuse of free will by emphasizing evil as a rhetorical and eschatological non-being. Furthermore, his doctrine also contains the risk in which the members of the human race can be hierarchically categorized by one's race, gender and class. The study concludes that the doctrine of “ontological hierarchy” or “order of creation” needs to be reinterpreted in light of the message of “new creation” testified in the Bible.
