Abstract

This paper critically evaluates the claim that Augustine’s doctrine of “seminal reasons” (rationes seminales) is theologically compatible with theistic evolution (or evolutionary creationism). Augustine asserts that God created the world not through a temporal process spanning six days, but simultaneously and instantaneously. In this act of creation, most creatures were formed as seminal reasons-immaterial and invisible potentials oriented toward their fully developed forms. Many proponents of theistic evolution argue that this notion provides theological grounding for the concept of ongoing creation through gradual evolutionary processes. However, this study contends that such a claim fails to account for the metaphysical and theological presuppositions underlying his concept of the fixity of species and reflects an arbitrary interpretation of Augustine’s theological understanding of seminal reasons. Augustine’s doctrine of seminal reasons is intrinsically and essentially connected to such notions as “simultaneous and instantaneous creation,” “potentiality as the temporal manifestation of immutable eternal reason,” “God’s sovereign governance over secondary causes,” “the fixity of species,” and “the completion of creation.” Within Augustine’s theology of creation, these concepts unfold in a manner that precludes the acceptance of theistic evolution. This study attempts an integrative and systematic critique that addresses the interpretive shortcomings of previous analyses of how theistic evolutionists have engaged Augustine’s notion of seminal reasons. The discussion centers on three key questions: First, are seminal reasons the unfolding of designed potentialities, or a dynamic force for the transformation of species? Second, is the fixity of species a product of historical context or a theological conclusion? Third, is creation a finished act or an ongoing process? The answers to these questions reveal that, while both Augustine’s doctrine and theistic evolution may appear to share a surface-level similarity in appealing to the idea of potential development within living beings, they fundamentally diverge concerning the nature of that development.
