“플라톤 철학에 대한 아우구스티누스의 관점에 대한 소고 : 경건의 개념을 중심으로”

초록

본고는 플라톤 철학에 대한 아우구스티누스의 사상을 이해함에 있어서 기독교적 경건이 고려되어야 한다는 점을 주장한다. 그동안 다수의 학자들은 아우구스티누스의 사상에 신플라톤 철학의 영향을 강조해 왔지만, 그의 신학 사상에 접근함에 있어서 회심 동기와 플라톤철학과의 불연속성은 크게 주목 받지 못했다. 그의 관심은 처음부터 하나님을 예배함, 즉 경건에 집중되어 있다. 그의 유년 시절과 회심의 과정을 묘사하고 있는 『고백록』(Confessions), 『자유의지에 관하여』(On Free Will),『참된 종교에 대하여』Of True Religion에 대한 종합적인 연구는 다양한 철학사상들을 포함하여 플라톤 철학에 대한 아우구스티누스의 포괄적인 관점을 제시한다. 이 작품들에서, 아우구스티누스는 방대한 논의를 통해 마니교와 신플라톤주의를 포함하여 다양한 철학사상들이 근본적으로 창조주와 피조물의 차이를 인식하는 데 실패한다는 것을 증명하고, 참된 경건이란 오직 삼위일체 하나님에 대한 예배에 있음을 강조한다. 본고는 아우구스티누스가 플라톤 철학을 방법론적으로 사용하는 반면, 그의 중심 사상을 지배하는 관점은 다름 아닌 기독교적 경건이었음을 증명한다.

Abstract

This survey of Augustine is based on the supposition that consideration of the Christian piety is significant of the understanding of Augustine’s central thought, with respect to his view of Platonic philosophy. As far as Augustine’s view in the use of Platonic philosophy, the prevailing opinion in Augustinean scholarship was that Augustine’s thought was fundamentally under the Neoplatonic influences. It is true that Augustine used Neoplatonic insights and notions to reveal the errors of Manichaean dualism, and even supporting the Christian theology. However, one needs to be reminded of the fact that Augustine began to refute Platonism in his earlier writtings. A comprehensive study of his works On Free Will and Of True Religion, as well as Confessions which includes the process of his conversion, provides Augustine’s perspective of Platonic philosophy. In these works, Augustine attempts to claim that both Manichaeism and Platonism fail to distinguish the fundamental differences between Creator and creatures, and demonstrates that the true worship depends on God the Trinity. This implies that the concept of piety plays the pivotal role in his understanding of religion, Platonism, and other philosophies.
