아니면, 그리스 로마 시대 황제나 위대한 인물들에게 부여된 칭호인 “하나님의 한 아들(a son of God)” 또는 “신적 인간(divine human being)”으로 고백하는가?
Abstract
This paper explored the meaning of the centurion's confession in Mark 15:39. In the narrative of Mark's Gospel, how does the Roman centurion confess Jesus? Does the centurion confess Jesus as “the Son of God” as Mark and the Markan community believe? Or, does he confess Jesus as “a son of God,” or “divine human being,” a title bestowed on emperors and great personalities in Greek and Roman times? Or, does he make mocking confessions like the other mockers at the foot of the cross? Or, did Mark, who wrote the Gospel of Mark, deliberately obscure his writing? After summarizing the opinions of scholars, the author claims that the centurion confessed Jesus as “the Son of God.” José Enrique Aguilar Chiu sees the use of eksepneusen(ejxevpneusen) in Mark 15:37, 39 as a fulfillment of Mark 1:8. In other words, he claims that the centurion confessed Jesus as the Son of God by receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit by Jesus at the time of Jesus' death, which is predicted by John the Baptist. While agreeing with Chiu's opinion, I did what Chiu did not do in this thesis. In other words, in this paper, I try to show that pneuma(pneu/ma) is connected to eksepneusen(ejxevpneusen), baptism with the Holy Spirit by Jesus, and the centurion's confession in the entire narrative of Mark's Gospel. To this end, Mark's intention was explored by examining Mark's use of pneuma(pneu/ma), which has been overlooked by researchers so far. Mark's intention is also connected to the fact that he does not use the term kardia(kardiva), which generally refers to the inner side of a human being, in Jesus, that Mark uses eksepneusen(ejxevpneusen), which is not a general term for death in Mark, in Jesus. In Mark's narrative, the Holy Spirit(pneu/ma) that came upon Jesus leads Jesus' ministry. Finally, at the moment of the death of Jesus, John the Baptist's prophecy in Mark 1:8(“He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit”) is fulfilled, and the centurion is baptized with the Holy Spirit by Jesus. As a result, in the Gospel of Mark, the centurion makes the confession that no human being has been able to make until now, that is, "Jesus was the Son of God." Therefore, this Gentile centurion is now becoming a model for the Gentiles who believe in Jesus in Mark's era. Therefore, the centurion's confession is the same sincere confession of Christianity as the confession of Markan community.
