본고는 전방위 영화주의자인 홍파의 영화 세계에 대해 연구했다. 홍파는 시나리오로 신춘문예에 등단한 이후, 평론으로 다시 등단했고, 이후 영화 감독으로 활동했다. 1970년대의 영화 운동이었던 ‘영상시대’ 동인으로 그는 활동했다. 1970년대 한국영화계에서 홍파는 평론가, 시나리오 작가, 감독으로 활동한 사람이다. 본고는 그런 홍파의 영화 세계를 분석했다. 지금까지 홍파는 총 8편의 영화를 연출했다. 먼저 멜로드라마가 5편 있다. 전반적으로 이 영화들은 화려한 스타일을 구사하면서, 흔한 멜로드라마 같은 삼각관계에 빠진 고전적인 스토리를 거부한다. 세련된 스타일이 칭찬 받기도 했지만, 당시 크게 부각되지는 않았다. 다음으로, 전통적 소재를 다룬 영화가 있다. 윤회설을 다루거나, 고전적인 공포를 소재로 하거나, 향토물인 경우가 그렇다. 주로 영상시대의 담론과 연결된 이 영화들은 멜로드라마보다 더 주목을 받지 못했다. 전반적으로 홍파의 영화는 화려한 스타일을 구사하지만, 스토리와 조화를 이루지 못해 아쉬움을 남긴다.
Abstract
This paper examines the film world of Hong Pa, a versatile filmmaker. After making his debut as a screenwriter by winning the New Spring Literary Contest, Hong Pa made a second debut as a critic and later worked as a film director. He was a member of the Yeongsang-sidae (Visual Generation), a film movement of the 1970s. In the Korean film industry of that era, Hong Pa was active as a critic, screenwriter, and director. This paper analyzes the cinematic world of such a figure. To date, Hong Pa has directed eight films. First, there are five melodramas. These films generally employ a colorful style and reject conventional narratives centered on love triangles which are common in the genre. His sophisticated style was praised, but it did not receive significant attention. Next, he made films dealing with traditional subjects, such as reincarnation, classical horror, or local color. These films, mainly connected to his activities in Yeongsang-sidae, received even less attention than his melodramas. Overall, Hong Pa’s films feature a colorful style that often fails to harmonize with the story.
