Abstract

This paper examined the early literary criticism of Yeom, Mu-ung(염무웅), focusing on the concepts of ‘modernity’ and ‘realism’. Yeom Mu-ung is a leading literary critic of the April 19th Generation and, alongside Baek Nak-cheong(백낙청), a key figure who spearheaded Changbi(Creation and Criticism), representing a progressive literary ideology. Yeom Mu-ung’s criticism attempts to understand literature in relation to reality and the times, a perspective which can be viewed as an appropriation of the April 19th Revolution from a national and popular minjok/minjung standpoint. Yeom Mu-ung’s critical stance is summarized by the terms ‘national literature’(민족문학) and ‘people’s literature’(민중문학). The concepts forming the core of these discourses are precisely ‘modernity’ and ‘realism’. Yeom Mu-ung’s reflection on ‘modernity’ is a product of an anti-colonial historical view seeking to break away from Western modernity. He challenged the existing literary historical convention that explained the emergence of modern literature based on Western modernity. Instead, he emphasized the establishment of an autonomous modern national literature from a subjective perspective. In the same vein, he designated ‘realism’ not as a Western literary movement(like factualism) but as a stance toward literature—furthermore, as a term for works that successfully reveal the concreteness of life within the context of history and reality. Thus, Yeom Mu-ung’s early criticism is concentrated on reconstructing the progressive development of Korean literary history and affirming a desirable attitude toward literature, grounded in this new perspective on ‘modernity’ and ‘realism’.
