본 연구는 1980년대 이후 염무웅 비평의 변모를 서사시론을 중심으로 재검토하고, 그의 문학관이 한국 현대문학 비평사에서 갖는 의의를 밝히는 데 목적이 있다. 4․19세대의 시민적 자각과 민중문학론에 기반한 그의 초기 비평은 세계화와 냉전 해체 이후의 현실 변화 속에서 새로운 인식틀을 요구받았으며, 이에 따라 그는 민족문학론을 남북문학 통합이라는 장기적 관점에서 재정립하고 한민족문학․범민족문학 구상을 변증적으로 사유하였다. 특히 이러한 사유의 재편을 이끄는 중심 개념이 바로 서사시론이다. 염무웅에게 서사시론은 단순한 장르 복권이 아니라, 분열된 현실을 통합적으로 조망하고 역사적 감각을 회복하는 문학의 근본적 역할을 재구성하는 비평적 장치였다. 결국 염무웅의 후기 비평은 서사시론을 매개로 민족문학의 역사적 책무를 재검토하고 세계화 시대 문학의 방향을 재정립한 사유의 궤적으로 평가될 수 있으며, 이는 한국 현대문학 비평의 지평을 확장하는 중요한 이론적 의미를 지닌다.
Abstract
This study aims to reexamine the transformation of Yeom Mu-woong’s literary criticism since the 1980s, focusing on his Epic Poetry Theory, and to clarify its significance in the history of modern Korean literary criticism. His early criticism, grounded in the civic consciousness of the April 19th generation and the theory of People Literature, was challenged by the socio-cultural changes brought about by globalization and the end of the Cold War, requiring a new critical framework. Accordingly, he redefined ethnic literature from a long-term perspective of inter-Korean literary integration and critically reflected on the concepts of Korean National Literature and Pan-National Literature. The central concept guiding this restructuring of thought was narrative poetry theory. For Yeom, narrative poetry theory was not merely a revival of a literary genre but a critical tool to comprehensively perceive a fragmented reality and reconstruct the fundamental role of literature in restoring historical consciousness. Ultimately, Yeom Mu-woong’s later criticism, mediated through narrative poetry theory, can be evaluated as a trajectory of reflection on the historical responsibilities of national literature and a reorientation of literary practice in the era of globalization. This approach holds significant theoretical implications for expanding the horizon of modern Korean literary criticism.
