Abstract
The Inaba rabbit folktale of Japan can be found very easily in Asia. When the geographical distribution of the folktale changes from east to west, the extent of elaborateness of the folktale has the traits of being more refined. Hence, since India is located in the west end of geographical distribution of the folktale, it is highly probable that India is the origin of the folktale. On the basis of this assumption, the course of the spread of the folktale could be reconstructed as following according to the analysis of its contents. In India there is no counterattack from the part of the aquatic animal and it is only deceived by the land animal. When the folktale spreads to the east to reach Indonesia, even though the aquatic animal fails to counterattack, it at least shows the response of the counterattack to the land animal. When the folktale travels to further east, like Vietnam, the aquatic animal succeeds to counterattack to the land animal. When the folktale travels more to the east and reaches in South China and spreads to Han society, it develops into the folktale of the aquatic animal’s succeeding counterattack on the land animal and explaining the rabbits body traits of short tail. When the folktale crosses the sea and reaches to Korea, it is transformed to explain the reason why the rabbit comes to be dumb and how the mountain spirit cures the wound of the rabbit at the same time. When the folktale finally crosses the sea and reaches Inaba area, it settles to the folktale that the land animal deceives the aquatic animal to cross the sea and is counterattacked by the aquatic animal and is wounded and is cured by the mountain spirit. When the folktale is included in the central archive of Koziki, it becomes the conflict story of brothers’ experimenting good and evil and explaining the origin of the apotheosis of the rabbit. In terms of spreading the folktale, the origin of Inaba rabbit is India and when the folktale travels via Indonesia, Vietnam and China. When the folktale reaches to Korea, its shape becomes the most similar to that of Japan. In other words, it is Korea that Inaba rabbit’s immediate origin is.
