Abstract
Since ancient times, Japan has been deeply influenced by Chinese literature. In particular, during the early modern period, the development of the publishing industry and the expansion of book distribution accelerated the reception and transformation of Chinese literature within Japan. A representative example of this phenomenon is the reception of the Chinese classical novel “Suikoden” and the group of adapted works known as ‘Suikodenmono’. Initially introduced to Japanese readers in its original Classical Chinese form, “Suikoden” was later translated and adapted, significantly influencing various literary genres, including the Yomihon. This paper examines the types and characteristics of ‘Suikodenmono’ as a preliminary step toward analyzing how “Suikoden” was adapted and restructured within Japanese literature. The reception of “Suikoden” not only reflects the acceptance of Chinese classical literature, but also contributed to the formation of a new genre of fiction—the Yomihon. While conventional literary histories of Japan have regarded “Suikoden” as central to the emergence of Yomihon, this study positions its influence as one of several formative elements. Furthermore, it reexamines the significance and role of ‘Suikodenmono’ in Japanese literary history from the perspective of knowledge dissemination.
