Abstract

This study aims to extend the conventional dyadic framework of conversation research—focused primarily on the speaker–listener relationship—by examining how the linguistic participation of side address contributes to the construction and transformation of the “interactional frame” (ba) in triadic conversations. The analysis is based on negotiation discourse among Japanese and Korean university students (three native speakers per language group), with a focus on the utterances of the second listener. Expressions were categorized and compared according to three dimensions: stance-presenting, boundary-adjusting, and topic-shifting. The results show that in the Japanese data, there was a strong tendency to value harmony and order, with second listeners functioning as relational coordinators who softened the tone of the conversation through indirect expressions of empathy and agreement. In contrast, the Korean data revealed more direct expressions of personal stances, and second listeners actively intervened by inserting their opinions and even steering the flow of conversation. These findings indicate that the utterances of the second listener go beyond a merely supportive function and play a central role in renegotiating agreement, shifting topics, and regenerating the interactional frame. Conversation, as revealed through this study, is a dynamic, multi-voiced interactional space co-constructed by multiple participants. Within this space, the second listener—while not exercising overt control—exerts a significant influence on the development and structure of the discourse. Furthermore, this research highlights the need for a participant-centered analytical perspective that considers not only the linguistic function of an utterance, but also who says it and from what positional role, as a future direction for capturing the multilayered nature of conversational interaction.
