On Talking About a Third Party : A Case Study of Conversations between a Japanese native speaker and a Korean native speaker on First Acquaintance

본 연구는 일본과 한국의 초면회화에 나타난 제3자의 이야기의 출현에 대해 분석한 것이다. 연구 결과 한국어모어화자가 일본어모어화자에 비해 제3자 이야기를 더 많이 하는 것으로 나타났다. 일본어모어화자는 화제의 일부로 제3자의 이야기를 하였다. 한국어모어화자는 제3자의 이야기로 이야기를 전개했다. 일본어모어화자는 화제와 관련된 제3자의 정보로 상대방과 이야기를 나누었다. 한국어모어화자는 제3자의 이야기를 하면서 자신과 관련된 이야기도 많이 하였다. 일본어모어화자는 공통점 탐색, 공감 형성, 정보 교환, 회화 전개를 위한 화제의 발견을 위해 제3자의 이야기를 언급했다. 한국어모어화자는 주로 정보 제공을 하기 위해 제3자를 언급하는 것으로 나타났다.
Abstract
This study analyzes the appearance of third-party stories in Japanese and Korean conversations at first acquaintance. The findings show that native Korean speakers are more likely to tell stories about third parties than native Japanese speakers. The Korean speakers build their accounts on stories of third parties. Meanwhile, the Japanese speakers use a third-party story as part of the topic they talk about. The Korean speakers also talk more about themselves while telling third-party stories, while the Japanese speakers communicate with their counterpart with the information about third parties related to the topic. It was found that native Japanese speakers refer to the story of a third party to discover common topics to build rapport, exchange information, and carry on the conversation. In contrast, native Korean speakers mainly refer to a third party to provide information.
