Abstract

Ukihune, the final heroine of Genji Monogatari, is a character constrained by a substitute image of the other, making her position within the dynamics of subordination and subjectivity inherently ambiguous. However, Ukihune stands out as the only character in Genji Monogatari who both attempts suicide and later enters religious life. This unique trajectory establishes a narrative centered on Ukihune that progresses from romantic entanglement to suicide, and ultimately to spiritual renunciation. This study investigates how the monogatari structure develops through a series of binary oppositions — the other and the self, life and death, the secular and the spiritual — and seeks to reframe Ukihune’s story as a pivotal culmination within the work. Examining the strengths and limitations of previous literature, this study focuses on the subordination and subjectivity inside the narrative to highlight the structure of binary oppositions and verify the effectiveness of the self and other framework. Further insight is drawn from the analysis of the prose and Waka expressions in the scene where the characters cross the Uji (宇治) River. Here, the symbolic resonance of うき舟 is explored as it reflects not only the contradictions and tragic destiny between Niou no Miya and Ukihune, but also themes of impermanence and the existential anxiety of human life. Attention is also given to the usage of もの思ふ to trace the narrative structure of suicide and spiritual renunciation based on the love triangle portraying intersections of the gaze of the other and the act of self-reflection. This study shows that the use of もの思ふ, mediating the gaze of the other and the act of self-reflection, serves as a key narrative tool symbolizing the desire of each character and intensifying conflict. At the same time, when used introspectively, もの思ふ repeatedly evokes the symbolic meaning of うき舟, reinforcing the logic behind Ukihune's suicide and spiritual renunciation inside the monogatari. By analyzing the binary oppositions inside the monogatari's structure, this study repositions Ukihune’s narrative — marked uniquely by suicide and religious renunciation — as a significant culmination within Genji Monogatari, thereby revealing its deeper thematic and structural importance.
