‘-어도’절의 사실성에 대하여 - 연결어미 ‘-어도’의 은유 구조를 중심으로

‘-어도’는 결합하는 명제의 사실성에 따라 사실적인 명제를 나타내는 절에 결합한 경우 사실적 양보, 가정적인 명제를 나타내는 절에 결합한 경우 양보적 조건을 나타내는 어미로 불려왔다. 이 글은 이와 같은 기존의 시각과 달리 사실적 양보와 양보적 조건이 별개의 범주가 아니라고 보았다. 이러한 현상이 나타나는 이유를 연결어미 ‘-어도’가 가진 은유 구조를 바탕으로 설명할 수 있기 때문이다. 다른 어미들과 마찬가지로, ‘-어도’ 역시 은유적 확장의 과정을 통해 양보의 의미를 세 영역에서 나타낼 수 있다. 이때 세 영역은 실제 세계를 기반으로 한 내용 영역, 사고의 과정을 기반으로 한 인식 영역, 발화 행위를 기반으로 한 화행 영역으로 나뉜다. ‘-어도’가 쓰인 양보문은 이들 각 영역에서의 양보를 나타낼 수 있는데, 이때 ‘-어도’에 결합한 절의 사실성에 차이가 나는 것은 각 영역에서 쓰일 수 있는 명제의 사실성에 차이가 나기 때문이다. 내용 영역에서의 양보를 나타내는 ‘-어도’에는 사실인 명제가 결합하기 어렵지만, 인식 영역과 화행 영역에서의 양보를 나타내는 ‘-어도’에는 사실인 명제가 결합할 수 있다. 이때 양보는 본질적으로 조건과 유사하다고 여겨져 왔으므로, ‘-어도’절의 사실성을 살피는 데 조건절의 사실성이 영역에 따라 달라진다는 점을 적극 참고하였다.
Abstract
It is said that there are two different kinds of concessives depending on the factuality of –eto clauses: Factual concessives with factual propositions, and concessive conditionals with hypothetical propositions. This paper deals with the reason why there has been this phenomenon. Basically, this is due to the metaphorical structure of ending –eto. As with other endings, -eto can represent concessive meanings in three different domains via metaphorical extension: content domain, epistemic domain, and speech-act domain. The factuality of –eto clauses depends on which of these domains –eto is used for. -eto clauses are incompatible with factual propositions in the content domain while they are compatible with factual propositions in the epistemic and speech-act domain. Since concessives are essentially similar to conditionals, the study referred to the fact that the factuality of conditionals differs according to the domains.
