Abstract
This study analyzes Zhu Zhen’s (朱震, 1072-1138) theory of Najia (納甲) and the “Najia Diagrams” included in the Hanshang Yizhuan Guatu to redefine his scholarly role in Southern Song Yi studies (易學). While previous research has regarded the “Najia Diagrams” in Hanshang Yizhuan Guatu as Zhu Zhen’s ‘creation,’ this paper reexamines this assumption by focusing on the fundamental discrepancy between his textual explanations of Najia theory and the visual logic of the diagrams he presented. Zhu Zhen’s Najia theory inherited and developed Yu Fan’s (虞翻, 164-233) Najia teachings within the context of Song dynasty Yi studies of diagram and image-number (圖書易學) and Neo-Confucianism. He elevated Najia to a core principle of I Ching studies and redefined its philosophical status by integrating it with the mathematical philosophy of Hetu-Luoshu studies (河洛學) and Neo-Confucian ethical concepts. However, the “Najia Diagrams” in Hanshang Yizhuan Guatu follow a “New Najia Diagram” format centered on the lunar phases’ waxing and waning, rather than the directional logic of Yu Fan’s Najia theory. To explain this discrepancy between theory and diagram, this paper presents three key pieces of evidence. First, through records by Lei Siqi (雷思齊) of the Yuan dynasty, it demonstrates that the “New Najia Diagram” already existed in the scholarly lineage of Fan Echang (范諤昌) before Zhu Zhen. Second, through the case of the “Taixuan Zhunyi Diagram” (太玄準易圖), it reveals Zhu Zhen's ‘compilation habit’ of including diagrams without identifying their original authors. Third, through Zhu Zhen‘s own testimony in the “Hanshang Yizhuan Biao” (漢上易傳表), it confirms that he perceived himself as an ‘integrator’ who ‘collected theories and supplemented deficiencies.’ Through this analysis, this paper reevaluates Zhu Zhen’s role in I Ching history from a ‘creator’ of Najia diagrams to an ‘integrator’ whose primary methodology was collection and compilation. This discussion demonstrates the significant meaning that the transmission of Song dynasty Yi studies of diagram and image-number was not a linear development, but a complex and dynamic process in which various intellectual traditions competed and merged.
