Abstract
This study aims to reexamine the philosophical thought and historical significance of Fan Echang, who played a crucial role in the transmission of Heluo studies during the Northern Song dynasty but has not received sufficient scholarly attention. To achieve this, the research explores Fan Echang's philosophical thought through an analysis of his works and contents, and investigates the transmission content of Heluo studies and Fan Echang's position through a comparison between Zhu Zhen’s theory of “Hetu” (河圖) and “Luoshu” (洛書) transmission and Shao Bowen’s (邵伯溫) theory of “Xiangxue” (象學, study of images) transmission. Fan Echang's Yizheng Zhuijian was a philological study that corrected errors in the Zhou Yi text and questioned the authorship of the “Ten Wings” (十翼), representing a pioneering attempt that preceded Ouyang Xiu’s (歐陽修) Yitongzi Wen (易童子問). His Dayi Yuanliu Tu systematized the contents of diagrammatic numerological studies including theories of najia-nayin (納甲納音), the five elements' generation numbers, and the generation of eight trigrams from four images. The philosophical thought contained in his “Sixiang Bagua Tu” was adopted by Liu Mu, demonstrating scholarly continuity between the two figures. His study of Yi was comprehensive, encompassing not only diagrammatic numerological studies but also textual criticism, with a holistic character that integrated meaning (意), language (言), images (象), and numbers (數). Although there has been recent controversy regarding the teacher-student relationship in the Heluo studies transmission from Chen Tuan through “Fan Echang-Liu Mu,” chronological reexamination and analysis of philosophical continuity confirm that the teacher-student relationship remains valid. However, the “Hetu” and “Luoshu” mentioned by Zhu Zhen should not be understood as having been transmitted statically without change from Chen Tuan to Liu Mu. Rather, the “xiangxue” tradition originating from Chen Tuan was dynamically inherited and developed through Fan Echang, and the systematic framework of “Hetu” and “Luoshu” studies was completed when it reached Liu Mu. In conclusion, Fan Echang can be evaluated as a figure who played a decisive bridging role in the formation of Song dynasty Heluo studies. While inheriting Chen Tuan's philosophical thought, he developed it creatively, providing the foundation for Liu Mu's completion of Heluo studies, and holds the position of a progressive successor who filled the intellectual historical gap between Chen Tuan and Liu Mu.
